I can’t really think of an American comparison, for a series that’s continued in different forms for 60 years, though with changing stars all the way. What started off as a goofy kids sci-fi monster show, has continued as one. It almost died out with a last gasp as an attempted US TV reboot on the Fox network of all places.
It’s hard to describe its cheesy and yet charming tone, with nearly unforgivable visual effects at some points. Perhaps the best description is: children would hide “behind the sofa” (an English term) but still peek or listen in, because they wanted to find out how it ended. If you can imagine yourself as a 10 year old, fully engaged in a plot no matter how terrible the production value, you’ll be able to get through some Doctor Who. So basically as a grownup – have an extreme ability to suspend disbelief, or be on drugs.
